First Mexican Baptist Church
First Mexican Baptist Church was established in 1888 to provide ministries in the predominantly Hispanic community in the inner city of San Antonio, Texas. Over its extended 115 years of existence, the Church has gone beyond its primary mission of meeting the spiritual needs of its members by also providing its community and neighborhood with services such as Pre-K day care, after-school tutoring programs, senior citizens activities, Meals on Wheels, and linkage with the Willie Velasquez Learning and Literacy Center in offering GED, ESL, and computer instruction. These services are provided to the community on a nondenominational basis. The organization’s latest initiative in providing community services is the formation of a charter school: Primera Academia Charter School (PACS), whose mission statement is “to provide at-risk youth primarily from Hispanic neighborhoods in the inner city with a second to opportunity achieve a successful learning experience.” |
