Women's Initiative for Self Employment
The mission of the Women’s Initiative for Self-Employment is to assist low-income women of diverse ethnic and social backgrounds in becoming economically self-sufficient through entrepreneurial activities. A leader in the microenterprise field, the organization provides low-income women with the opportunity to create jobs for themselves and others, to access the mainstream economy, and to increase their economic self-sufficiency. Women’s Initiative provides business assessment and entrepreneurial readiness workshops, comprehensive business management training, personal development training, one-on-one technical assistance, business plan writing workshops, peer support networking groups, and ongoing business support services. The organization provides comprehensive microentrepreneurship services for Latinas, who speak Spanish as their first or only language, including many recent immigrants, through the Alternativas para Latinas en Autosuficiencia program (ALAS). The program is based in San Francisco’s Mission District and continues to have a strong focus within that community. Over the last 11 years, the ALAS program has served 2,300 women, with more than 98% of these clients being low-income. ALAS graduates report starting or expanding over 281 small businesses in recent years. Through its unique training curriculum and array of technical assistance services targeted to the particular needs of Latina women, the Women’s Initiative provides all services in Spanish. Classes and workshops cover such topics as permits and licensing, legal business structures, powers and levels of government, negotiating skills, cost analysis, credit, and personal finances. Classes are taught using functional context learning techniques that are appropriate for adult learners with limited formal schooling. |
