Health Care Reform

As the debate on health care reform develops, one thing is clear: all Americans, including Hispanics, deserve solutions that will tackle our nation’s broken health care system and provide quality, affordable health care to everyone.

Health Care Disparities

Latinos are overwhelmingly disconnected from the health care system. As the ethnic group with the highest uninsurance rates in the country, Latinos are often deterred from accessing essential health care services.

Latino Children’s Health

Children’s well-being is largely hinged on their ability to stay healthy. Latino children are among those most at risk for health problems because of poor access to health coverage and affordable health care services. In fact, Latino children represent two-fifths of the uninsured children in the U.S. and are more than twice as likely to be determined in fair or poor health by their parents.

Social Security Administration (SSA) No-Match Letters

On August 15, 2007, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) finalized new rules regarding Social Security Administration (SSA) no-match letters. Under the new rules, employers have new legal obligations upon receipt of a Social Security no-match letter. If the employer does not follow the suggested procedure, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can use the no-match letter as evidence that the employer hired or continued to employ an unauthorized worker. Unfortunately, NCLR fears that the new no-match rules will hurt Latinos and other workers.

State and Local Immigration Initiatives

With the failure of the federal government to pass comprehensive immigration reform, states and localities are playing a more prominent role in immigration regulation.

The State Children’s Health Insurance Program

The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a health coverage program of critical importance to many children living in low- and moderate-income families throughout the United States.

Tax Reform

Taxes are key to making sure that Latinos are served well and fairly. A progressive tax system ensures that those who can afford to pay do so.

Latino Credit Card Use

Increasing Latino access to affordable credit.

No Child Left Behind

NCLR supports standards-based reform and policies that increase access to challenging academic coursework for Latino students and provides schools with the resources needed to help Hispanic children, including English language learners, achieve high academic standards.

The Federal Budget

Given the importance of the federal budget for America’s communities, the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) recognizes that it is essential for Latinos to be engaged in the dialogue, which shapes national budget priorities.
