Give voice to Latino priorities! NCLR’s National Advocacy Day is an opportunity for you to work with other Latino community organizations in holding your elected officials accountable for and responsive to the needs of the Hispanic community, and of all Americans.


Wednesday, March 9 – 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Briefing and Advocacy Training at National Association of Home Builders (new location, just one block from NCLR's Headquarters): 1201 15th St., NW, Washington, DC 20005. CLICK HERE for a map of the training location.

11:30-11:40 a.m. Welcome and introductions from Janet Murguia, NCLR President and CEO 11:40-11:45 a.m. Sponsor welcome, PMI
11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Casual lunch/Meet-and-greet with NCLR policy staff
12:30-1:15 p.m. Advocacy training and tools, Cecilia Muñoz, NCLR Policy Vice President
1:15-1:30 p.m. Lobby visit demonstration, NCLR staff and participants
1:30-1:45 p.m. Message from Lorraine Lee, Vice President of Chicanos Por La Causa and NCLR Affiliate Council Chair
*1:45-2:30 p.m. *Issue briefing, NCLR policy staff
2:30-4:00 p.m. Breakout sessions/In-depth analysis of issue agenda
4:00-4:30 p.m. Discuss Tuesday logistics (schedules, Capitol locations, etc.)
4:30-5:30 p.m. Raul Yzaguirre Building tour and refreshments (optional)

Thursday, March 10 – 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Advocacy Day: Visit members of Congress at the U.S. Capitol.

9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Hill visits with various members of Congress
All Day Drop off National Advocacy Day report forms at Location TBD

An important part of becoming an advocate is building relationships with your congressional members and state legislators. For this reason, we strongly encourage you to set up your own meetings with members of your state’s congressional delegation. CLICK HERE for information on how to set up a lobby visit with your member’s office.

*We will be addressing the following issues during Wednesday's briefing and during Thursday's Capitol Hill visits:
- Early Childhood Education - Head Start reauthorization
- Education Funding - NCLB parent assistance programs, Local Family Information Centers, and increased funding for secondary ed student programs
- College Access for Immigrant Students - DREAM Act/Student Adjustment Act
- Workforce Program Access for Latino Workers - WIA reauthorization
- Legal Immigrant Children Access to Health Care - ICHIA provisions as part of TANF reauthorization
- Health Care Funding - Funding for SAMHSA's preventative health and treatment programs and opposition to cuts in Medicaid
- Job Opportunities and Security for Farmworkers - AgJOBS Act
- Comprehensive Immigration Reform - The elements of positive immigration reform
- Opposition to the "REAL ID Act"
