Summary

NCLR is seeking an Associate Director for Education and Child Advocacy in its Washington, DC office. This position is housed in the Office of Research, Advocacy, and Legislation’s (ORAL). The Associate Director is responsible for overseeing, directing, and fundraising in support of education and child advocacy, lobbying, field work, and research activities. This position assists in the management of a team of up to five professionals dedicated to research, lobbying and advocacy on education and child advocacy issues and helps oversees the development of materials such as toolkits, fact sheets, position statements, etc. Oversees and imparts technical assistance to NCLR Affiliates and other community-based organizations. In addition, the Associate Director assists in the management a budget of $600,000 to $1 million; and is responsible for all internal reporting on education and child advocacy activities.

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) – the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States – works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. The Associate Director will work closely with other members of the policy team and co-workers with extensive expertise in communications, editing/production, media, fundraising, special events, and marketing.

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Report to the Director of Education and Child Advocacy.
  • Coordinate closely with the Director to fulfill the goals of the project.
  • Assists in the management of the Policy Analyst, Legislative Analyst, Field Outreach Coordinator, Research Analyst and Fundraising/Administrative Coordinator for the project.
  • Assists in the development of both short-term and long-term policy, legislative and fundraising strategies in support of the project
  • Serves as the secondary external relationship manager in education and child advocacy circles.
  • Assists in the coordination and development of materials (toolkits, fact sheets, position statements, etc.) in support of education and child advocacy activities.
  • Facilitate and provide trainings related to education and child advocacy when/where appropriate with AMS and field staff.
  • Oversees and imparts technical assistance to Affiliates and other community-based organizations in targeted states.
  • Assists the Director with fundraising efforts in support of the project by coordinating with a variety of staff, and managing key funder relationships.
  • Oversees the policy, legislative, and fundraising budget for the project.
  • Responsible for all internal reporting on the project.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) or at least four years of relevant experience required.
  • Ability to develop and implement field outreach strategies with community-based organizations, and/or advocates at the local or national level is required.
  • Quantitative skills, familiarity with research methods or demonstrated ability to manage a research portfolio.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team and lead groups of peers is essential.
  • Substantial experience in managing staff and budgets is preferred.
  • Media experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Latino community required; background in issues related to education and child advocacy required.
  • High degree of initiative and ability to work under tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Willingness to carry out a wide range of activities, including professional and logistical tasks.
  • Bilingual ability (English/Spanish) preferred.
