¡YA BASTA! NHLA TO DISCUSS CONGRESS’ IMMIGRATION ASSAULT AND THE LATINO COMMUNITY RESPONSE

Groups to Launch “It Starts With You” Voter Mobilization Campaign

Washington, DC – The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a nonpartisan coalition of major Hispanic national organizations and distinguished Hispanic leaders from throughout the nation, will host a Spanish-language telephonic news conference on Friday, September 29 at 1:30 p.m. EST to discuss the consequences of Congress’ recent actions on immigration and to announce the launch of a joint Latino voter mobilization effort [call-in information below].

NHLA members have expressed growing concern over the reemergence of key portions of the harsh, punitive, and ineffective Sensenbrenner bill in a slew of legislative initiatives passed by the House of Representatives last week and currently being debated in the U.S. Senate. The “It StartsWithYou/Empieza Contigo” project is a nonpartisan multimedia campaign designed to educate voters and encourage the Latino community’s voter participation in the upcoming 2006 election. Among those participating on the call are Ron Blackburn-Moreno, NHLA Chair; Manny Mirabal, President, National Puerto Rican Coalition; Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO; Cecilia Muñoz, Vice President, NCLR; and Frank Sharry, President, National Immigration Forum. The event will be co-hosted by New America Media.
