NCLR PRESIDENT TO TESTIFY BEFORE CONGRESS ON HEALTH DISPARITIES IN THE LATINO COMMUNITY

Washington, DC—Janet Murguía, President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., will testify before the Subcommittee on Health, U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 concerning the “Health Equity and Accountability Act” (H.R. 3014) and the barriers that Latinos face to quality health care.  The hearing will be presided over by Representative Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and will take place at 10:00 a.m. in Room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Murguía will speak on how the “Health Equity and Accountability Act,” if passed, could address many of the underlying barriers that limit access to care for Latinos and other racial and ethnic minorities. H.R. 3014 would provide Latinos and immigrants with greater access to the health care system and encourage the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate health care while funding proven community-based programs to conduct health promotion activities.
