The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a health coverage program that is critical to many children of low- and moderate-income families throughout the United States. Millions of children, including many Latinos, are able to access health care when they need it thanks to the combined forces of SCHIP and Medicaid, our country’s major public health insurance programs for nonelderly individuals. However, significant gaps in health coverage persist for Latino families. In fact, Latino children represent 38% of all of the uninsured children in the U.S., a disturbing trend that will increase health disparities if it is not addressed.

SCHIP must be renewed by policy-makers this year, and Latinos have much at stake in the debate. There is great promise for Latino children to experience healthy development and improved health status by ensuring their access to affordable health coverage through SCHIP.

El Programa de Seguro Médico Estatal para Niños

El Programa de Seguro Médico Estatal para Niños (SCHIP, por sus siglas en inglés) es un programa de seguro y cuidado médico vital para muchos de niños de familias de ingresos bajos y módicos a través de los Estados Unidos. Millones de niños, mucho de ellos latinos, pueden tener seguro y cuidado médico cuando lo necesitan gracias a las fuerzas combinadas de SCHIP y Medicaid, el mayor programa de seguro médico público en el país para personas que no estén jubiladas. Sin embargo el porcentaje de familias latinas con seguro y cuidado médico aún está más bajos que otros grupos étnicos y raciales. De hecho, niños latinos representan el 38% de niños sin seguro médico en Estados Unidos. Si este estándar preocupante continúa desatendido, dicho porcentaje aumentará.

SCHIP debe ser re-aprobado por los políticos este año y latinos tienen mucho que ganar en este debate. Hay mucha esperanza de que niños latinos puedan tener un desarrollo saludable y un estado de salud mejorado al permitirles gozar de cuidado y seguro médico a través de SCHIP.
