The Midland Community Development Corporation (MCDC) was established by the Midland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to promote economic and community development in economically depressed areas of the city through the institution of programs designed to
alleviate conditions of unemployment and blight, and increase the population density through housing efforts, facilitating the creation of new business, and administering educational programs. MCDC is partnering with the Midland College Business and Economic Development Center (BEDC) to provide the day-to-day coordination of the program.
Midland AmeriCorps members serve as math, reading, and computer tutors, instructors and teaching assistants at the Midland College Cogdell Learning Center and Casa de Amigos. Members serve as computer technology instructors at the Midland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce/Community Development Corporation teaching basic computer operations and the use of the Internet for educational, employment, and career and college exploration. MCDC also utilizes members to provide credit counseling, financial literacy instruction, and other assistance to families who are seeking to become first time home buyers. Members provide employment-readiness counseling and workshops, career exploration assistance, and job placement assistance at the Midland Workforce Network. Other members will be trained to become certified tax preparers to work with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program during tax season.
