NCLR Convenes Local Leaders to Discuss Effects of Job Policies on Florida Voters
September 25, 2012Today, NCLR (National Council of La Raza) held a roundtable discussion centered on the findings of a forthcoming report, “Now Hiring? Latinos and the Job Creation Policies of the South Atlantic.” Prominent Florida community, business and elected leaders discussed how state policymakers and business leaders can ensure job creation policies tap the full potential of Hispanics, a group expected to comprise 18 percent of the U.S. labor force by 2018. Participants talked about how to increase the competitiveness of Latino workers and to integrate support for Latino-owned businesses into statewide job creation efforts, among other issues.

Janet Murguía and Secretary Duncan Discuss State of Latino Education at Town Hall
September 19, 2012Today, NCLR (National Council of La Raza) President and CEO Janet Murguía and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan hosted a town hall meeting about Latinos and education at the Metropolitan City College in Kansas City, Mo. The town hall is the latest stop on the “Education Drives America” bus tour, a U.S. Department of Education initiative which highlights important educational issues including school reform, student retention, and early childhood education. Today’s discussion focused on Latino students, who represent 23 percent of the nation’s schoolchildren.

NCLR Deeply Dismayed by Decision to Allow Racial Profiling Provision in SB 1070 to Take Effect
September 06, 2012NCLR (National Council of La Raza) is extremely disappointed by U.S. District Judge Susan R. Bolton’s decision yesterday to allow the ‘show me your papers’ provision of Arizona’s anti-immigrant law to go forward. This law requires police officers to check the immigration status of people they stop whom they suspect to be undocumented immigrants. Although Bolton declined to block the provision, she underscored the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the law may be challenged after it goes into effect.
