Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas

Springdale,Arkansas

The Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas (HWOA) was founded in 1999 by a group of women concerned with the lack of participation by Hispanics in community affairs in Northwest Arkansas. HWOA has introduced a continuing tradition of community events to engage the local Hispanic population, educational organizations, and other organizations. These events include the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration, the Scholarship Award Ceremony, the Hispanic Heritage Month exhibit at the University of Arkansas, the HWOA Annual Conference, and monthly membership meetings. HWOA also runs two social service programs for the Hispanic community in Northwest Arkansas. Hispanic Students for Wellness aims to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce pregnancies among youth in the Springdale area. GEM (Guiding, Empowering, and Mentoring) was developed by HWOA to help newcomers to the community navigate the system to find opportunities for self-development, education, and employment, thereby empowering Hispanic participants to reach their potential through effective support.
