Tejano Center for Community Concerns

Houston,Texas

The Tejano Center for Community Concerns exists “To improve life opportunities for low income children and families through the provision of education, social and health services, and community development initiatives.”  In 1992 the Tejano Center for Community Concerns was established as a non-profit organization in the State of Texas. It gave life to the hopes and dreams of residents of Houston’s East End, a predominantly Hispanic populated area, for an organization that would to be a catalyst to improve lives and be an agent for change empowering neighborhood residents – to benefit the family, neighborhood, and greater community. The early Tejano Center pioneers realized the greatest opportunity to respond to community needs was to provide a comprehensive array of social, educational, economic, and housing services.  Throughout its history the Tejano Center has demonstrated its readiness and willingness to partner with the private sector in order to promote its goals and objectives and to better serve the greater Houston community. This includes partnering with builders of affordable homes who target the low and moderate-income market.

The Tejano Center’s programs and services have progressively expanded in great part through strategic partnerships with such entities as the City of Houston, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Texas Education Agency, Baylor College of Medicine, Harris County Juvenile Probation Office, and National Council of La Raza. Additionally, to achieve its mission it has developed a number of local, state and national affiliations.  Among these relationships are the National Council of La Raza, Neighbor Works America and Local Initiatives Support Corp. It is also a City of Houston and Harris County certified Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) and HUD-designated Housing Counseling Agency.

In 2002, becoming aware of similar needs in the greater Brownsville, Texas area the Tejano Center expanded its programs into that area, beginning with adding a fourth campus to its Raul Yzaguirre School for Success. The Tejano Center’s service area is primarily Houston’s greater East End located at 2950 Broadway (main campus and administrative headquarters), 6901 Brownwood (Housing office), and the Brownsville, Texas campus.

Today, the Tejano Center for Community Concerns, with an annual budget in excess of $17 million operates its programs, and employees over 180 personnel in the greater Houston and Brownsville, Texas areas. The Tejano Center administration and board of directors remain committed to the vision and hope of its early pioneers through the operation of the following programs:

  • Raul Yzaguirre School for Success
  • Affordable Housing Program (Home Ownership & Senior Housing)
  • Adult Education Program
  • Youth Shelter and Foster Care Program
  • Juvenile Justice Diversion Program
  • Baylor College of Medicine Teen Health Clinic
