TMC - Teaching & Mentoring Communities

Laredo,Texas

In 1971, Texas Migrant Council, Inc., (TMC) was incorporated as a private nonprofit Migrant Head Start provider for children of Migrant farm workers. In its early years, the staff served children and their families along the Texas-Mexico border for the first nine months of the program; as families migrated, so did the staff. The Migrant Head Start centers would close at the end of the season in Texas and relocate the operation to different parts of the country where the Migrant families found agricultural work. Today, its Migrant and Seasonal Head Start program serves close to 8,000 children ages birth through 5 years and their families in the states of Texas, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, New Mexico, Iowa, Oklahoma and Nevada.  Although the roots of TMC began as a mobile Migrant Head Start program, it has evolved into a multi-million, multi-state, multi-service organization that provides services in family literacy, consumer education, prenatal care and educating parents in identifying quality childcare.
