Youth Policy Institute

Los Angeles,California

The Youth Policy Institute (YPI) is a nonprofit organization providing technology-based education and training for disadvantaged communities in California and nationwide. YPI developed in 1983 as an outgrowth of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial and has been operating in California since 1996, primarily in Pacoima and East San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. YPI’s Computer Literacy Program has provided more than 300 predominately Latino families of fourth and fifth graders at Pacoima Charter School with complete computer systems in their homes. The ACE Program serves low-performing high school students in partnership with area high schools by helping them boost their grades, graduate high school, and attend college. Students and community residents can also take distance learning college courses through the online academy, offered in partnership with local community colleges. The Medical Office Careers Program trains community residents for employment by hospitals, doctors’ offices, and clinics. For adults, YPI offers program in adult basic education, English as a second language, adult secondary education, and citizenship preparation. In September 2004, YPI will open the Bert Corona Charter School, a community-based middle school with 250 students.
