Embracing Community Literacy Award
Recipient: Ashley Aceves (Youth Development Inc.)
The winner of this award is recognized for her patience with the tasks at hand and the performance of her tutees; in addition to succeeding in helping students achieve marked improvements in their language arts classes, Ashley has established a favorable reputation with the teachers she assists in the classroom. Ashley’s work with the Supplemental Education Program through the AmeriCorps LENS project, demonstrates what results are attainable with devotion to improving literacy skills – through a multi-sensory approach to teaching, Ashley raised the reading levels of her tutees by over two grade levels.
Best Corps Award
Recipient: Tejano Center for Community Concerns (TCCC)
The recipient of the Best Corps Award has clearly gone beyond the essential tasks and shown excellence in commitment to civic engagement, working well as a team, overcoming obstacles presented to the group, and forwarding the mission and the work of the host operating site. Through its efforts to provide physical and emotional support to Hispanic communities ravaged by Hurricane, TCCC proved itself willing and able to do whatever it takes to provide the support necessary for the people and places in need.
Metamorphosis Award
Recipient: Emil Morales (MAAC Project)
Through Emil’s increased commitment to community and national service demonstrated by an escalating dedication to the AmeriCorps program and its activities, the recipient of the Metamorphosis Award has displayed a visible attitude change in favor of improving local conditions and leading those with whom he interacts in a constructive manner. Today we recognize Emil’s transformation from a shy teenager intimidated by group settings to a mature young adult acknowledged by his peers as an “expert” in assistance with Family Asset Building and after-school tutoring.
Outstanding AmeriCorps Member of the Year
Recipient: Edgar Mata (Youth Development Inc.)
The Outstanding AmeriCorps Member of the Year Award recognizes Edgar for his dedication to service, leadership, and teamwork through commitment to both his community and the nation as a whole. Described as an “excellent role model for youth to look to through his versatility, determination and strong work ethic.” Edgar has also worked with the tobacco prevention youth coalition, Valencia County Students Concerned About Tobacco, to host community events to educate residents about the hazards of tobacco use. Edgar has demonstrated a drive to make a difference through his position with YDI.
Raul Yzaguirre Leadership Award
Recipient: Diane Retana (Instituto del Progreso Latino)

The recipient of the Raul Yzaguirre Leadership Award has exhibited extraordinary leadership capabilities, project management skills, and exceptional dedication to her duties. In stepping up to supervise at least one project on behalf of her operating site, Diane has positively impacted her community through sound organization and teamwork. Diane consistently brings energy and enthusiasm to IPL members and her leadership engages AmeriCorps members to put fourth greater effort in their service activities. From helping others become U.S. citizens to coordinating food drives, Diane, an International Studies major at DePaul University, has demonstrated that her commitment to changing the world reaches beyond the classroom.
Team Member of the Year Award
Recipient: Wilfredo Gloria (MAAC Project)

Admired by his peers, Wilfredo has demonstrated dedication to the AmeriCorps program through prompt and consistent attendance and a constant willingness to put the team’s goals before his own. With his eagerness to always lend a hand and his knack for understanding the importance of “behind the scenes” operations, Wilfredo has exemplified what it means to be selfless to support the objectives of a group. Willy is currently a graduate student at Point Loma Nazarene University pursuing his masters degree in Mass Communication.
