Saving a Generation of Wealth: National Solutions to the Foreclosure Crisis
Homeownership is the key to the American Dream. Latinos, like most Americans, purchased their first home to build wealth, create a financial safety net, and move into the middle class. But with forecasters predicting a second record-breaking year for foreclosure rates, the recent gains made in Latino homeownership are in jeopardy. If policymakers, lenders, and Wall Street do not act, a generation of Latino wealth could be eroded over the next couple of years. NCLR is bringing experts together to discuss national solutions to the foreclosure crisis.

The Latino Community and HIV/AIDS: What Can We Do to Stop the Epidemic?
HIV/AIDS rates continue to increase among Latinos despite 25 years of education efforts. NCLR and the NCLR/California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation, and Leadership Training, in collaboration with NCLR Affiliates, have addressed this gap by developing innovative HIV/AIDS prevention programs that tackle the barriers faced by Latinos when attempting to access HIV/AIDS education and services.

Somos el Futuro: The Health Status of Latino Children in America
Latino children represent nearly 40% of the uninsured children in the U.S., severely limiting their access to the health education and care that can foster healthy development. Many Latino children live in low-income families (61%), and their ability to access affordable health services is severely impaired. The barriers faced by Latino children when accessing health services contribute to the widening health and social disparities faced by Latino children. However, there are strategies which can ameliorate these disparities and give Latinos the opportunity they deserve to become full and productive members of American society.

“Jail Time for Skipping School: Does the punishment fit the crime?”
Having your child get arrested and go to jail for skipping school is any parent’s worst nightmare. For thousands of parents across the U.S., this nightmare has become their everyday reality. For Latino families, the situation is even more difficult when language and cultural barriers are present. Parents and communities become further disempowered from participating in truancy prevention and intervention solutions when they are unaware of support and resources; and/or do not fully understand their rights and responsibilities in dealing with the school and juvenile justice systems.

Latino Voters: Making Their Mark on the 2008 Election
The presidential candidate that understands and addresses the issues that are relevant to Latino voters stands to gain a significant advantage in their quest for the White House. While some candidates recognize the power of the Latino vote, others choose to neglect the fastest-growing major segment of the U.S. population. Various factors enhance the importance and potential of the Latino vote in the 2008 presidential election: several swing states have large Hispanic populations; large-scale, experienced voter registration and mobilization campaigns targeting Latino voters; and the presence of immigration as a major issue for the Latino community. NCLR's civic engagement initiative, the Latino Empowerment and Advocacy Project (LEAP), has convened a group of nationally renowned experts to present their analysis of Latino demographics, registration and voting patterns, and the multitude of issues that motivate Latino voters. Participants will leave the workshop with:
