Advocating for Change and Creating Better Public Policy!
Presented by Alliance for Justice
Affiliate/Nonprofit Management
Room 25A
With the rise in anti-immigrant sentiments and the absence of federal immigration reform legislation, it is more important than ever that immigrant rights advocates take advantage of the power and reach of effective advocacy. By knowing the rules and limits of advocacy in general, and lobbying in particular, groups can feel confident in fighting for better public policy at the local, state, and federal level. As NCLR President Janet Murguía said in a recent speech, immigration is “on the verge of becoming one of the largest civil rights issues of our generation.” Latinos must continue to stand up for their rights and safeguard freedoms for future generations. We can and should advocate for change in our communities and throughout the country. In fact, America's future depends on it!

An Economic and Labor Policy that Lifts All Boats: How Can We Make Sure the Labor Market Works for Latinos?
Presented by American Rights at Work
Workforce Development
Room 23A

Latinos constitute an increasing share of the labor market in cities and states throughout the nation, and their success is central to the ability of those labor markets to function and serve the needs of the entire population. While all U.S. workers have experienced slow job growth, stagnant wages, and declining benefits, there is growing awareness that Latino workers are especially hard hit by the current economic downturn. Latinos face a labor market in which they have fewer jobs, lower wages, fewer career ladders, lower rates of health insurance coverage and lower quality of coverage, and declining pension coverage relative to their non-Latino counterparts. Given this, a panel of experts will address the following questions.
