Special Session 3:00–5:00 p.m.
Protecting the Public Discourse: Taking Hate Out of the Immigration Debate (Open only to staff/board of NCLR Affiliates and NCLR Emerging Latino Communities groups)
Room 25A
At the beginning of 2008, NCLR embarked on a major initiative, the Wave of Hope campaign, with the goal of exposing the presence of hate groups and extremists in the immigration debate and moving the debate to more rational territory. This training session for NCLR Affiliates will focus on how to address the presence of extremist organizations and their dehumanizing views on immigration, with a particular emphasis on local efforts. NCLR and its Affiliates have spent a lot of energy working to address the policy issues at stake, while television and radio have given the microphone to hate groups and vigilantes without regard to the nation’s interest in finding workable solutions. This training session will provide tools for fighting back based on NCLR’s experience implementing the Wave of Hope campaign and www.WeCanStopTheHate.org
- Learn what you can do to address the presence of hate groups in the immigration debate

With Latino homeownership rates trailing those of Whites, advocates and community leaders have spent decades trying to close the gap. Now, rising foreclosure rates threaten to erode the gains made in Latino and other minority communities. While public officials, lenders, and advocates struggle to come to an agreement on what should be done to address the issue, millions of families are expected to lose their home and financial well-being. In this town hall, leaders will come together in a dialogue on various strategies that have been proposed to stem the tide of foreclosures. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and share the experiences of their community.
