HIV/AIDS
  • At the end of 2002, 10% of the approximately 281,931 persons reported to be living with HIV were Hispanic. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report 2002; 14:p7, and table 9)


  • At the end of 2002, 20% (19.76%) of the approximately 384,906 persons reported to be living with AIDS were Hispanic. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report 2002; 14:p7, and table 10)


  • The AIDS case rate among Hispanic women was over five (5) times that of White women in 2002 (11.3 compared to 2.1 per 100,000). (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report 2002; 14:p14, table 5)


  • In 2002, Hispanic children, <13 years of age, accounted for 26% of all new AIDS diagnoses, compared to 7.6% among White children. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report 2002; 14:p13; table 4)


  • By race/ethnicity, from 1999 through 2002, the number of all new diagnoses of HIV increased 2.1% among Hispanics, compared to 0.9% among Whites. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report 2002; 14:p10; table 1)
SYPHILIS
  • In 2002, Hispanics were the second race/ethnic group in terms ofcases of primary and secondary syphilis reported to CDC, with a rate of 2.7 cases per 100,000 population; 14.2% of all cases of primary and secondary syphilis reported occurred among Hispanics.


  • The rate of primary and secondary syphilis among Hispanics was more than two times greater than the rate among Whites (Hispanics 2.7 cases per 100,000 population and Whites 1.2 cases per 100,000 population).


  • In 2002, the rate of primary and secondary syphilis increased 28.6 % among Hispanics (from 2.1 to 2.7 cases per 100,000 population); cases of this infection among Hispanic men increased 35.6%.


  • In 2002, the rate of congenital syphilis was 14.8 cases per 100,000 live births among Hispanics (based on the mother’s race/ethnicity). These rates are 11 times greater than the 2002 rate among Whites (1.4 cases per 100,000 live births).

CHLAMYDIA
  • In 2002, Hispanics were the third race/ethnic group in terms of incidences of Chlamydia, with a rate of 465 cases per 100,000 population.


  • The rate of Chlamydia among Hispanics was more than three times greater than the rate among Whites (Hispanics 465 cases per 100,000 population and Whites 127.2 cases per 100,000 population).

GONORRHEA
  • In 2002, Hispanics were the third race/ethnic group in terms of cases of gonorrhea reported to CDC, with a rate of 76.0 cases per 100,000 population.


  • In 2002, the rate of gonorrhea among Hispanics was more than two times greater than the rate among Whites (Hispanics 76.0 cases per 100,000 population and Whites 31.1 cases per 100,000 population).
