California Policy Office – Sacramento, CA

Since its inception, NCLR has engaged in a range of program activities with community-based organizations (CBOs) in California and, in 2000, expanded its field advocacy project to California to shape public policy as it affects the Latino community in the state. To complement the services provided to CBOs by NCLR’s Los Angeles Program Office, NCLR opened its Sacramento Policy Office not only to engage these organizations in state advocacy efforts, but also to help strengthen linkages between state- and national- level advocacy in order to shape state policy debates that have profound implications for Latinos in California. NCLR’s Sacramento office works on various issues affecting California’s Latino and English language learner students, from early childhood education through higher education. NCLR also promotes culturally and linguistically appropriate access to health care, human services, and a variety of issues that affect immigrants’ rights. The California NCLR Affiliate Network (CNAN) is comprised of 70 of NCLR’s nearly 300 affiliated CBOs among its members. NCLR’s California offices work together with CNAN to educate state legislators about the critical issues facing the community and to shape the development of policies that will reflect the needs of Latinos in California. NCLR has engaged its California affiliates in direct advocacy efforts through policy briefings, lobby days, various press events, and dissemination of policy-related information, research, fact sheets, capitol reports, and legislative action alerts.
