The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a health coverage program that is critical to children of low- and moderate-income families throughout the U.S. Millions of children, including many Latinos, are able to access health care when they need it thanks to the combined forces of CHIP and Medicaid—our country’s major public health insurance programs that serve financially strapped families and those with great medical need. These programs perform a tremendous public service by helping close the significant gap in health care coverage for Latino families and their children.
CHIP was renewed by policymakers in early 2009, providing increased health coverage resources for Latinos and other Americans. Information about the programs that will impact Latino children is listed below. There is great promise for Latino children to develop healthfully now that America is on the path toward equitable access to affordable health coverage through CHIP.
